3 things I did last year that helped me loose a stone (6kg)

I’ve always worked out and got the steps in but I wasn’t shifting any weight because of my social life so I made a few small changes that made a big change to my body.

1. Food is my love language and I eat out a lot. I set a food rule for my favourite deep fried dish. I found myself ordering chips a lot as a side when dining out. I’d get the salad and a side of a chips because “balance”. I realised I mostly value chips with a steak or a classic fish and chips. So I said I could only eat chips with those dishes. Forgo the salad if I’m looking for fullness and get a whole balanced meal that WILL keep me feeling full and satisfied.

2. Stop drinking earlier. I haven’t had a hangover since September 2024 (another post coming soon) but if I’m out for drinks I’ll ensure I put a plug in it after a couple and move onto softs of no/low options. Of course on some special occasions I’ll drink more but alcohol has so many calories in it that you don’t think about. In general I feel so much better for this shift in my habits.

3. Don’t buy the snacks. I know I can’t have chocolate or crisps in the house without inhaling the lot. So I stopped buying milk chocolate for the house and my pantry hasn’t seen a share bags of crisps in a year. Instead I got nairns marmite oatcakes (elite) for the savoury cravings and have the “healthy snickers” recipe on my feed for sweet treats. It’s higher calorie but more nutrient dense and satisfying. Also berries. Berries are amazing and really not that much more expensive than chocolate in this economy.

I still enjoy indulgent treats, but I buy one instead of multipacks.

There’s so many simple ways you can make small changes to your habits and lifestyle. Start small and you’ll notice a difference over time.
