Why are we Vitamin D deficient in winter?

In the winter most people will suffer with a Vitamin D deficiency. You can get good sources of it from foods like oily fish, eggs and fortified foods (where they add it in) but the best source of vitamin D is through synthesising (sunlight).

This means most people in winter won’t get their needed dosage from September through to early April as we aren’t usually outside in the day - especially when our shadows are shorter than our body.

Vitamin D is essential for absorbing calcium and boosts happiness by regulating mood neurotransmitters like serotonin which is why we get seasonal depression when we don’t have enough.

A supplement of 10ug should help most people through the winter and if you are escaping the winter for some sunshine, make sure to use SPF!
